Hello Lovelies, Happy New Year everyone :)Welcome to the first post of 2019. I am looking forward to what this year has in store, may it bring us nothing but joy and laughter.Oily skin type is a condition that develops due to overactive sebaceous glands. This activity is controlled by the androgen, or masculine and hormone. How to recognize/identify oily skin:Oily skin can be shiny, thick and firm appearance. Pores look enlarged mostly due to oil entrapped in the pilosebaceous follicle; Sebaceous glands are found next to hair follicles, which together form the pilosebaceous unit. Sebaceous glands are found throughout the body, except on the palm and sole and they are most abundant on the face, chest and upper back, where the skin is the oiliest. Their number remains practically unchanged throughout life, but their size increases with age. Oily complexion tends to look dirty and uncared for with occasional blemishes on areas, like the chin or the forehead and feels oily to touch. Why does the skin get Oilier:Hot and humid climates tend to exacerbate oil gland secretion, enlarged pores become aggravated with a dehydrated skin condition, making the skin more oily. Oily skin can also be aggravated by the misuse of skin care products, the tendency to dry the skin through the use of harsh soaps, excessive use of scrubs etc.NB: it is important to avoid overstimulation of skin functions through scrubbing or stimulating massage. The skin may appear oilier in the summer or warmer time/areas. The reason, however, is not an increase in sebum secretion, but rather a change in the viscosity of the lipids on the skin’s surfaceOily skin can be classified into two subcategories
- Oily without water deficiency– in this case, the skin has proper hydration; while it feels and looks oily, it doesn’t have the sensation of dryness
- Oily dehydrated with water deficiency: in this case, the skin lacks moisture, the individual tends to complain of dry skin.
The most common mistake most oily skin type make is using drying, dehydrating ingredients in an effort to feel less oily. This leads to skin feeling flaky, rough, and scaly.Products that are rich in oils will most likely only aggravate the oily condition and result in blemishes, blackheads, etc If the wrong oil is chosen as an active ingredient. It is important to distinguish oiliness comes from the oil glands and moisture from the intercellular channelsCare of oily skin:
- Requires a thorough yet gentle cleansing morning and evening, it is essential to keep oily skin clean and hydrated.
- Daytime protective moisturizer will help the skin maintain its suppleness and moisture
- Night creams, gels or lotions should help regulate oil gland secretion
- Exfoliators, such as AHAs or BHAs or weekly use of enzyme peel is highly recommended to help improve the look and texture of oily skin by reducing hyperkeratosis.
Wrinkle process is delayed on oily skin type when properly cared for.Active ingredients & Botanicals that may help reduce oil gland secretions are highly beneficial:Actives could include but are not limited to, Vitamin F, rosemary, lemon oil, lemon balm for their antiseptic (Antiseptics are a diverse class of drugs which are applied to skin surfaces or mucous membranes for their anti-infective effects.) and astringent: causing a tightening of soft organic tissues)Rosehip: for its antiseptic properties and ability to regulate oil gland secretion;Sage: antiseptic and antibacterial.Yarrow: which has astringent and antiseptic properties;Mint and thyme: which act as a solvent on the fats and have additional action on the sebaceous glands.Words & Meaning: AHAs: are alpha hydroxy acids – a class of chemical compounds that can be either naturally occurring or synthetic. Many are derived from organic sugars, with glycolic acid (from sugar cane) and lactic acid (from milk) the best-known and best-researched of the bunchBHA: also known as salicylic acid, is beta hydroxy acid – a derivative of aspirin. Salicylic acid t in skincare, it is mainly used to fight acne, thanks to its anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and exfoliating properties.Antiseptics: are a diverse class of drugs which are applied to skin surfaces or mucous membranes for their anti-infective effectsAstringent: substance causing a tightening of skin tissues.Love & LightNafsibotanical
